VCN Announces new Executive Director

The Directors of the Vancouver Community Network (VCN) are very pleased to announce the appointment of Tracey Axelsson as Executive Director.  This is a new position created after a lengthy consultation process. We are confident that Tracey's involvement will help VCN to accomplish its mission; making the full benefits of the internet available for everyone.

As social entrepreneur and business builder, Tracey has a strong focus on sustainable operations, communications, public relations, client relationship management, business development strategy, and branding.  She is a proven innovator and the mastermind behind the creation of the first car sharing organization in the English-speaking world – MODO – Vancouver's car co-op.

Tracey has great depth and capacity around taking an idea from 'unheard of' to positive uptake and success.  She is excited to be lending her knowledge and experience to work on the vital social challenge of bridging the digital divide.

Tracey was named one of BC's "Top 40 under 40" by Business in Vancouver and was honoured with a YWCA Women of Distinction Award. Shared Vision Magazine has recognized her as a "Visionary" while LiveSmart BC named Tracey as a Community Hero.

Text dial-up

Previously, text dial-up users could not use VCN's main dial-up numbers. This issue has been fixed and text dial-up users can now use any VCN dial-up numbers.

However, we have found that some text users do not have text accounts. If your text account does not work please contact the VCN Help Desk at 778-724-0826 or email [email protected]. Provide your VCN user name and ask that your account be switched to a text account. Account changes will occur on the same day after 6pm. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

Update: Dial-up maintenance Tues Sept 10 at 1pm

Update: The dial-up maintenance completed on Tuesday, September 10, 2013 at 2:30pm. There was a short downtime for the dial-up line, 604-638-1365. There was no downtime for 604-638-0189 and 604-638-0195 during the maintenance and all dial-up numbers are operational.

On Tuesday, September 10, 2013 at 1pm, VCN will be maintaining our dial-up lines. If you are connected to our dial-up service you might be disconnected for a short time. Please try reconnecting in a few minutes.

During the maintenance, VCN will be reducing the number of dial-up lines because they are underutilized. There will be no change to the quality of service.

Mailing list domain name vancouvercommunity.net renewed

On Thursday, July 18, 2013, the domain name, vancouvercommunity.net, expired and was renewed on the same day. VCN has taken steps to update contact information and create procedures to make sure all domain name's own by VCN do not expire in the future.

The domain name, vancouvercommunity.net, is mainly used by mailing lists. No mailing list messages were lost at that time but there could have been a delay in processing messages. Also, the mailing list web interface might not have been accessible.

CN Help Desk closed Mon May 20th

The VCN Help Desk at 704-333 Terminal Ave will be closed for Victoria Day on Monday, May 20th.

The VCN Help Desk will re-open on Tuesday. May 21th at 10am.

RESOLVED: VCN web down on Sat, Mar 23, 2013

RESOLVED: The VCN web site and other WebGUI sites were restored on Saturday, March 23, 2013 at 7pm.

Due to a hard drive error the VCN web site and other WebGUI sites were down on Saturday, March 23, 2013.

Scheduled Network Maintenance on Wed, March 20th at noon

There will be a scheduled network maintenance on Wednesday, March 20, 2013 between noon and 1pm. The downtime will be short and will be five minutes or less.

Resolved – Dial-up issue Mar 1st

On Friday, March 1, 2013 around 5am a network switch partially failed. Only dial-up service was affected.

On Friday, March 1, 2013 at 4pm a new network switch was installed and full service was restored at that time.

The replacement of the network switch would have affected other VCN services for a few minutes.

Resolved – Dial-up issue Jan 15th

On Tuesday, January 15, 2013 around 9pm the dial-up service at 604-638-0189 and 604-638-0195 were down. The problem was caused by the authentication service.

Dial-up service was restored at 11pm. The backup and text dial-up line 604-638-1365 was down earlier and was restored at the same time.
