Richly-percussive wind and string, guitar picking, sweet vocal harmony and kick-ass-instrumentals band, Thereafter hit the ground running with their first album together. 'Ceremony' showcases the song and tune-writing talents of Neil and Keona Hammond along with the instrumental skills of fiddler Annie Brown and the unusual and Juno-award winning backing of cellist Shanto Acharia and percussionist Ben Brown.

Thereafter brings home the sound that Neil and Keona were starting to define together a few years ago with Cleia, adding deep and rich arrangements to the hard-won themes of their songwriting. Sometimes fairground, sometimes classical, Thereafter somehow fuse blues, irish, swing and scandinavian roots into a very BC sound.

From the Great Northern Plains of Western Canada, Little Miss Higgins struts and serenades her way, guitar in hand, lips blazoned red, onto any stage. As if she just drove in off the back-road of another time with gravel dust and a sunset trailing behind her, this pocket-sized powerhouse plays music brewed up in old-time country blues sprinkled with a little jazz and maybe a hint of folk.

For her latest release, Bison Ranch Recording Sessions, Little Miss Higgins teamed up with a very talented quintet of musicians from Manitoba. She calls them the Winnipeg Five—Jimmie James McKee on trumpet, Eric Lemoine on banjo and pedal steel, Blake Thomson on guitar, Patrick Alexandre Leclerc on upright bass, Evan Friesen on drums and all five of them sing harmonies.

It is the smile that is the key for reading the musical universe of Beppe Gambetta. An open and disarming smile that is also the contagious and irresistible smile of a person who invites you to a musical journey with a light heart and curiosity. The destination, as for any traveller, is not totally defined because it is beautiful to find ourselves where we never would expect to be. With the horizon's line as a challenge and attraction, Beppe is continually composing his personal mosaic of sounds and tastes. From his unique background as an Italian musician in love with both American roots music as well as the music of his native country, Beppe has travelled the world to dazzle and charm music enthusiasts everywhere.

In a world dominated by the trends and logic of the market Gambetta's playing and singing stand out for their intimate emotions, communication, tone, sobriety and humour. An inspired music that modestly avoids relying solely on technical bravado, but also reveals the innermost feelings of a playful mind that is always exploring and innovating while staying firmly rooted in tradition.

With America in his heart and his roots in the sun and the olive trees of the Mediterranean sea, he naturally and seamlessly bridges the shores of the two continents, creating a musical fusion where American roots music and Ligurian tradition, emigration songs and folk ballads, steel string guitars and vintage harp guitars not only co-exist but interact, weaving a deep dialogue.

Beppe has just released a new cd, The American Album, a tribute to the great American Roots with a different vision.

Dar Williams has become a major force on the New England folk scene. An idiosyncratic songwriter who writes folk songs from a unique, often insightful perspective, Williams takes pains to avoid the coy and the quirky; her songwriting and performing style has been compared to that of Joni Mitchell and Joan Baez, but with a few acidic and at times hilarious twists.

On one level, the sizable body of work accumulated by celebrated writer/artist Dar Williams is a continuing narrative of her life — what she’s experienced and what she’s observed during her years of intensive touring. On another, it forms a detailed look at the course of modern-day existence in the decade and a half between 1993, when Williams released her debut album, The Honesty Room, and 2008, when her longtime label Razor & Tie released her seventh and most recent studio album, Promised Land. Throughout her career, Williams has employed a reporter’s keen eye and a fiction writer’s feel for nuance in the act of confronting what she’s described as “the big picture of how people approach life,” doing by examining and illuminating the minute details.

At the core of Williams’ work is a belief in the innate ability of people to make a better world, the product of countless observations in her travels and conversations with her fans. If anything, her optimism has intensified as she’s crisscrossed America during the tough times of recent years. “My big secret,” she says, with a twinkle in her eye, “is that we are gonna make it — but we’ll be the last to know.”

Listening to Kat Danser is like travelling with your ears. Her music draws a direct line from the Canadian Prairies to the Mississippi Delta. This Edmonton-based guitarist, songwriter and vocalist has been dubbed “The Queen of The Swamp Blues”. Her style is steeped in tradition yet distills a refreshing approach to roots, blues, and gospel music for the 21st Century. Danser offers a new take on centuries-old premises and is adept at taking jabs at modern-day cultural phenomena.

Danser’s third album, Passin’-A-Time, takes us with her from the wheat fields of Saskatchewan to the cotton fields of Mississippi. She has a deep passion, understanding and respect for Delta blues, one of the earliest forms of North American popular music, and draws heavily on the rich and fertile musical climate there. This new album is a testament to those cultural encounters. Rich in tradition yet modernistic in tone, Passin’-A-Time chronicles her unique musical journey along the rivers and rails of this continent.

Martha Scanlan has been touring and headlining festivals across the U.S. and Europe since the release of her critically acclaimed Sugar Hill debut The West Was Burning. Her newest project, Tongue River Stories, is a collection of songs about belonging and place. It comes out of her recent relative hiatus from the road, where she has been immersed in living and working on a hundred year-old ranch in the southeast corner of Montana, one of the last and truest strongholds of a uniquely American cowboy culture.

Cahalen Morrison & Eli West are, simply put, two of the most innovative and subtle roots musicians today. Their music draws from old folk sources, but it sounds vibrantly alive. Cahalen Morrison writes songs that sound like a Cormac McCarthy novel: simple, beautifully crafted, and seemingly formed from raw natural elements. Eli West brings jagged, angular arrangements based in bluegrass and old-time, but refracted through a 21st century lens. Like Ansel Adams’ photography, their music is instantly accessible and built from the simplest materials, but at the same time seems to transcend its base fundamentals. Together, Cahalen and Eli tap the root of the old country and bluegrass duets. As the sparse landscapes of Cahalen’s vocals reflect the warm glow of Eli’s voice, it’s clear that this duo was made to sing together.
