In the 2013 Vancouver Human Rights Lecture, Mary Ellen Turpel-Lafond will cover a range of topics including a description of living conditions and statistics on Aboriginal children in BC, and how we might go about addressing these unacceptable statistics.  She will discuss recent work of the Representative's Office – reports on Audit of Plans of Care and the government's role in Aboriginal services over the past ten or so years.  She will also look at education past and present and the Truth and Reconciliation Commission as related to the rights described in the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child.

Mary Ellen Turpel-Lafond is BC’s first Representative for Children and Youth, an Independent Officer of the Legislature who supports children, youth and families who need help in dealing with the child welfare system. She also provides oversight to the Ministry of Children and Family Development and advocates for improvements to the child welfare system. Ms. Turpel Lafond has worked as a criminal law judge in youth and adult courts, with an emphasis on developing partnerships to better serve the needs of young people in the justice system, particularly sexually exploited children and youth, as well as children and youth with disabilities.

In 2007, the Indigenous Bar Association awarded her the distinction of ‘Indigenous Peoples’ Counsel’. As well, Time magazine has twice bestowed honours upon Ms. Turpel-Lafond, naming her one of the 100 Global Leaders of Tomorrow in 1994, and one of the Top 20 Canadian Leaders for the 21st Century in 1999.

The 2013 Vancouver Human Rights Lecture is presented by The Laurier Institution, UBC Continuing Studies and CBC Radio One, and will be recorded for broadcast on the CBC Radio One program, Ideas.

In the House Productions is proud to present the Lookout Society’s annual gala fundraiser, H’Arts for the Homeless, an event inspired by those helped and supported by the Lookout Society.

Through circus, music, stories, dance and art, the gala will highlight the deep sense of relief and hope that a stable, safe home provides. H’Arts celebrates the joys, successes, untold strengths and stories of the residents, as well as the front-line workers who live and work at Lookout.

In the heart of Vancouver’s inner city lies The Imperial (formerly known as District 319), where this year’s Gala will be held on Thursday, October 3, from 6 – 9:30pm. The gala is our way of kicking off Homeless Action Week in a fun and memorable way. 

Experience art installations telling the story of homelessness, delicious food, fantastic performers, live visual artists, a silent auction and, of course, the live auction with comedian David C. Jones as our auctioneer. 

We are raising funds for the essential services and support necessary to bring solutions to homelessness in Greater Vancouver.

About Lookout Society

In 1971, a small group of caring people responded to homeless adults dying in the streets and asking for help. Their response was to reach out to these adults and offer beds and access to services to get people out of the crisis.

Today, Lookout has 19 buildings where we care for destitute and homeless adults and assist them as they transition out of homelessness. 

Since its inception, our Supportive Housing has been 100% full, with minimal turnover and 2,222 people on a wait list.

On September 13th, 14th, and 15th, supper and storytelling come together for Yin Yeung Express, a unique culinary event presented by In the House festival, Ken Tsui (Vancouver Chinatown Night Market) and Kevin Chong (author of My Year of the Racehorse).

Inspired by Hong Kong's signature open-air eateries (dai pai dong), memorable stories of food are paired with four fine-dining interpretations of humble Hong Kong café classics. Forget the greasy bowls of instant ramen with spam made to order and dive into a playful take on the cuisine's most iconic dishes prepared with an innovative mix of fresh ingredients. And yes, there will be vegetarian options.

With stories revolving around the memories and nostalgia of Chinese food, each evening of storytellers is curated by some of Vancouver's signature cultural purveyors: Rain City Chronicles (Vancouver's premier storytelling night), Ricepaper Magazine (Canada's only Asian Canadian literary magazine) and Kevin Chong (Vancouver author of Beauty Plus Pity and My Year of the Race Horse).

The bustling boulevards of Wesbrook Village will be alive with family-friendly activities during the community’s third annual community festival on September 7.

With the sights and sounds of fall, this special event promises fun for students, adults, and young families alike. Buskers will bring their beats to the streets, and musicians will take to the main stage with tunes that will appeal to all music lovers. Performers include Dr. Strangelove, Will Stroet and the UBC Opera.

Shoppers can enjoy a sidewalk sale where local retailers will showcase their products with interactive games and contests. Festival goers will enjoy a free BBQ lunch and the tasty samples from local eats including Jugo Juice, Menchie’s Frozen Yogurt and Blenz Coffee also promise to treat the taste buds.

For the young at heart, the festival also features a kids zone, complete with face-painting fun, crafts tables, bouncy castles and rock wall climb.

Parking at Wesbrook Village is free and the community is on the number 41 bus route.
