Expressing her muse through ghazals and Punjabi folk songs, Kiran Ahluwalia explores the language of the heart with beautiful artistry and smoldering intensity. Born in India, raised in Canada, and now living in New York City, her enchanting and seductive music has garnered glowing praise from critics around the world.

At the 2012 JUNO ceremonies Kiran's latest CD, Aam Zameen: Common Ground was awarded Canada's prestigious BEST WORLD MUSIC ALBUM OF THE YEAR, and was selected by the UK's Songlines magazine as one of the Ten Top of the World CD's. Kiran also won the Canadian Folk Music award for World Solo Artist of the Year.

It's incredibly invigorating to see how much interest my music is sparking, says Ahluwalia. When you're doing something with no clear blueprint it's hard to know if it's working. But I'm getting lots of feedback these days that it's working, she adds with a laugh.

With each successive recording project, Kiran has moved ever onward from her own musical upbringing, reaching well beyond her extensive training in the genres of ghazal and Punjabi folk song. Her compositions and arrangements are a reflection of an ongoing quest to create timeless music that looks to the future while still maintaining a vital through line to its storied past. On her latest CD she collaborated with legendary Tuareg band Tinariwen. Previous recordings have found her fusing the sounds of her native India with Portugese fado and the Celtic fiddle of Natalie MacMaster.

On stage Kiran is accompanied by some of North America's most exciting artists; Downbeat magazine's No. 2 Rising Star guitarist Rez Abbasi, hard grooving tabla player Nitin Mitta, the very funky Mamadou Ba on bass and superbly melodic accordion player Will Holshouser.

Her discography, now five albums deep, is one of global music's most interesting furrows. Her ease of manner on stage makes her a unique and inspiring performer whose legion of fans continues to grow with every captivating performance.

I like to connect things that I am passionate about even if they are outside my Indian musical upbringing, says Ahluwalia. When it works its nothing short of sublime. It's really the essence of everything for me.

Portland's Foghorn String Band stands at the top of today's vibrant old-time music revival and a fine example of what an unending revival it is. Each album finds them deeper into the tradition, more familiar with the rich resources of roots music, and more focused, but still propelled by that undercurrent of punk energy. – Art Menius, WMMT

Internationally acclaimed Foghorn Stringband has been at the vanguard of a revival in American old-time music for over a decade now. They've traveled the globe, been signed to a major label, and inspired a new generation of old-time musicians, all without compromising their love of traditional American music. But they've gathered new ideas and new band members too. Their unique sound still comes from the fiery, intertwining melodies of Stephen "Sammy" Lind's fiddle and Caleb Klauder's mandolin, but now they're supported by the bedrock-solid rhythm foundation of Reeb Willms' guitar and Nadine Landry's bass. And when it comes to vocals, they deliver; four powerful and exceptional voices resulting in countless combinations of harmonies. A typical Foghorn set is based around exquisitely rare old-time tunes and songs, but a vast knowledge of early country music and recent explorations in Cajun song traditions have molded a powerful new sound. Any band would be happy to have mastered one music genre, but Foghorn Stringband have a roaming spirit, and are already sparking new revivals of American roots music traditions.

They play the old way, the way you'd have heard stringbands play on Southern radio stations back in the 1930s. They don't fancy up the music to make it more modern, instead they reach deep into the heart of the songs, pulling out the deep emotions that made them so enduring in the first place. It's a whole new world today for folk musicians, but the four powerhouse musicians in the Foghorn Stringband prove that they're still riding on the cutting edge, with one foot in the analog past and one foot in the digital future.

Composer, multi-instrumentalist and vocalist Taj Mahal is one of the most prominent and influential figures in late 20th century blues and roots music. Though his career began more than four decades ago with American blues, he has broadened his artistic scope over the years to include music representing virtually every corner of the world – west Africa, the Caribbean, Latin America, Europe, the Hawaiian islands and so much more. What ties it all together is his insatiable interest in musical discovery. Over the years, his passion and curiosity have led him around the world, and the resulting global perspective is reflected in his music. His creativity knows no bounds and his explorations of roots music continue to result in powerful musical collaborations and very danceable recordings.

Shemekia Copeland is the daughter of Blues legend Johnny Copeland. Her powerful voice is guaranteed to raise your spirits – and the roof!! She recently released her 7th album, 33 1/3 (both her age and her preferred music format!) The Chicago Sun-Times says: Shemekia Copeland, nearly 15 years into a career but only as old as this album's title, seems to have been bequeathed Koko Taylor's title as Queen of the Blues. She deserves it, showcasing on 33 1/3 the worthwhile effort and resulting majesty in successfully blending old-world soul with new-age sass.

She has been singing professionally for almost half her life, and the new CD truly showcases her remarkable voice on a series of stripped-down small band arrangements of bluesy songs penned by Bob Dylan, Sam Cooke, her father, and more.

On stage, 17 year old award winning performer Kiérah – doesn't dance and she doesn't sing but she sure knows how to play the fiddle! After 13 years of classical training (receiving Canada's highest mark on her RCM Performance exam) combined with 12 years of learning and performing Celtic fiddle music… Kiérah is a "fiddler extraordinaire". Inspired by the heartfelt playing of Martin Hayes, her own playing radiates the love she has for traditional (and not so traditional) Celtic music – always playing with the clear and precise intonation for which she is known.

After spending last summer in Ireland, she was further inspired by the music, the musicians, the history and the kindness of the people – much of which is reflected on her new release – Stonemason's Daughter. As a prolific composer, Kiérah has published B.C.'s first book of all original fiddle tunes and features 15 of them on her new CD. www.irishmadness.com

Adam Dobres is a natural born guitarist with a sensitive ability to embody any style of music. From classical, to jazz, to Celtic, he can do it all. He has travelled all over the world with such notables as Ruth Moody, The Bills, Oliver Swain, Toni Childs, Daniel Lapp, and Blue Rodeo. Adam is always energetic and creative in expressing his love of life and music through his guitar. www.adamdobres.com

Kierah and Adam, as well as multi-instrumentalist/producer Adrian Dolan really hit it off musically and created Kierah's brand new release, Stonemason's Daughter. Adam is an amazing guitarist, and did a superb job at making his guitar playing unique to each set. He feeds so well into Kierah's exceptional fiddle playing, and together they create a fantastic, full sound. Taking traditional tunes and combining them with Kierah's original tunes, they give even traditional tunes a current, modern feel. Celtic meets contemporary with this exciting duo!

It is the battered cassette jammed in the tape deck of the getaway car, the music Ida Lupino cues up on the roadhouse jukebox as she counts the till after close. This is Queen of the Minor Key by Eilen Jewell, a smart cookie with a heart of burnished gold and enough stories to keep even the rowdiest crowd hanging on her every word. Though its long shadows and dark corners make her kingdom feel intimate, her sovereign domain stretches as far as the imagination. Its denizens seek refuge in padded rooms, abandoned automobiles… and strong spirits.

Since her official 2006 debut, Boundary County, Jewell has surveyed a wide range of traditional musical styles, from the folk and jug band leanings of her early recordings, through an album-length homage to Loretta Lynn and the country gospel of her work with The Sacred Shakers, right up to 2009′s Sea of Tears, which bristled with the electricity of ’60s UK garage rock and Chicago blues. Queen of the Minor Key draws on everything from classic country to early R&B, with an emphasis on sounds from the seamier side of the tracks. With dirty sax riffs and low-slung guitars, the instrumentals that bookend the album evoke the bump-and-grind exotica of vintage Southern California suburban saloons. Yet on the flipside, Jewell imbues slow, jazzy numbers with torch and tenacity that linger long past last call.

Eilen Jewell is the Queen of the Minor Key. Sad songs are her wealth and finery. Lend her your ears, and you will quickly hear why her humble subjects admire and adore her more with each passing year.

The Barn Birds are Jonathan Byrd and Chris Kokesh, two young American troubadours. Here's what one of our favourite critics says about Jonathan Byrd: “This rootsy North Carolinian may be the most buzzed-about new songwriter in folkdom. He displays John Prine's gift for stark little songs that tell big, complex stories, Guy Clark's lean melodicism, Lyle Lovett's wry mischief, and Bill Morrissey's knack for the revealing image.” – Scott Alarik, Boston Globe

Johnson, Miller & Dermody have played together for over a decade and a half and this trio has been one of the Pacific Northwest's best-kept secrets until now. All three have busy solo careers but have found time to gather together to play this rootsy, bluesy, soulful music that they love. They sat down at David Lange's studio and played the music found on Deceiving Blues all together in the same room, in real time, no headphones, no studio gimmicks, and no attempts to fix things later. Honest, immediate, heartfelt and real, in the tradition of the artists and music that inspired them. They repeated the method with their latest offering, We Heard the Voice of a PorkChop.

They first played as a trio when all three were on staff at the Centrum Blues Workshop in Port Townsend, WA. They are known among afficionados of country blues as three of the finest teachers as well as players. Orville Johnson is a renowned blues and old time singer, guitarist, mandolinist, dobro player and lyricist with a penchant for the obscure, the wacky and the weird! John Miller is a brilliant guitarist best known in these parts for his duet work with mandolinist John Reischman. Grant Dermody is a stunning harmonica player, who has accompanied Eric Bibb here in Eric's most recent concerts. Together these three Washington State musicians have recorded two amazing CDs of pre-war country blues and blues-infused originals. Expect to be charmed, entertained, and gobsmacked!
