Archie Fisher is a Scots folk singer who was born into a musical family and he originally sang in skiffle groups in the 1950s. Gravitating towards traditional folk and then his own songwriting he formed a music club in Edinburgh, The Howff, and helped launch the career of such stars as The Incredible String Band and Barbara Dickson.

Some of his compositions, notably Witch Of The Westmoreland and Dark Eyed Molly, found their way into the repertoires of Fairport Convention and Stan Rogers but he went out of the limelight for a while before launching a long-running show on BBC Radio Scotland called Travelling Folk in 1983. A few years later he recorded a live album with Garnet Rogers – Off The Map – and Garnet produced his next record: Sunsets I've Galloped Into.

Archie concentrated on his radio show and sporadic concerts in the U.K. for many years after that, but has now returned to touring. He's played at The Rogue three times (with Garnet in 2001, solo in 2002 and with the late, lamented Raylene Rankin in 2005) and we are very pleased to be able to welcome him back!

Local Celtic band Ballyhooley is a dynamic group of musicians in love with the Irish musical tradition. Playing nine different instruments among them, the band members delight in creative arrangements representing the many moods of Irish music which is variously raucous, stirring and hauntingly melodic. The members of Ballyhooley met in local sessions around town, where a tiny but passionate Irish music community thrives half a world away from Ireland.

Ballyhooley is: Vanessa Kay – fiddle, mandolin, guitar and vocals. Tim Fanning – uilleann pipes, flute, whistles and vocals. Glenn Buholzer – guitar, bouzouki, mandolin and vocals. We would love it if they could accompany Archie on his memorable song couplet Witch Of The Westmoreland and The Return.

New Country Rehab cuts through the clutter of watered-down musical imitations with a modern, high-voltage, alt-country sound. Combining sharp innovation and a deep respect and knowledge of timeless musical themes and motifs, New Country Rehab's powerful music is full of love, loss, longing and joy. They are “more Arcade Fire than Lady Antebellum… like Canada's answer to the Avett Brothers and Mumford and Sons.” – Nigel Williamson, UNCUT (Jan 2012)

Spearheaded by lead singer and fiddle player John Showman, joined by Champagne James Robertson on guitar, Ben Whiteley on double bass and Roman Tome on drums and backing vocals, the Toronto based collective is “poised to be the next big thing in Canadian music” (Tom Power, CBC Radio). Growing audiences in Canada, the U.S. and Europe are responding to New Country Rehab's infectious love and enthusiasm for the music they are playing. The band makes it “super accessible, not only to fans of roots/folk/country, but even to the broader, less country inclined audience” (Josef Jensen, Indie Artist Podcast).

They have a new CD out for this tour, Ghost of your charms, and they were absolutely amazing at The Rogue last March – and again at Island Musicfest and Edmonton Folk Festival last summer. Don't miss this show.

Anaïs Mitchell and Jefferson Hamer are two songwriters who co-arranged a selection of epic old folk songs from across the Atlantic for their current release Child Ballads. For Mitchell, this recording comes on the heels of 2010’s Hadestown and 2012’s Young Man in America. Hamer began his career with the Colorado roots rock band Great American Taxi, but moved to New York in 2008 to pursue songwriting and a passion for Irish traditional music.

Mitchell and Hamer quickly discovered their shared love of Celtic and British Isles ballads, especially the classic folk albums of the 1970s, and made a plan to arrange and record some of their favorites together. But what began as a whimsical side project evolved into a serious collaborative endeavor spanning several years, three separate recording attempts, and a whole lot of cutting room floor as the pair navigated their way through a centuries old tradition.

The resulting album was recorded by producer/engineer Gary Paczosa in Nashville in early 2012. The production is minimal, and the songs are driven by two-guitar arrangements and the kind of close harmonies that call to mind Gram Parsons & Emmylou Harris or an acoustic Fleetwood Mac.

One of America's very best songwriters, Tom Russell lives near the Texas border town of Juarez (close to El Paso). He has performed 15 times at The Rogue and has released a string of amazing albums over the past few decades. He cut his teeth in the bars of Vancouver's skid road in the 1970s, quit performing for a while, and was famously convinced to resume his career when Grateful Dead lyricist Robert Hunter was a passenger in his NYC taxi cab.

Tom's 1999 album, The Man From God Knows Where, traced his family roots to Norway and Ireland and tells of his ancestors' troubles during the pioneer days in America. From that point onwards he has released some of the very best lyrical work this side of Bob Dylan. His songs and stories tell the tales of the victims and vagabonds living on the soft underbelly of America's forgotten towns; the down and outs with the most poignant epic experiences.

On Blood & Candle Smoke (2009) some of Tom's own stories came to light: working for the USO in Nigeria during the Biafran war of 1970, being threatened by guerrillas there and in Prince George BC a few years later. Threatened with lethal weapons, that is. All sorts of harrowing tales are told by this great American songwriter, and his performances are consistently stunning.

His latest album, Mesabi, continues his fabulous discography, and this will be his first Vancouver concert in over two years – and only his second in the past five years. Book early to avoid disappointment. His shows always sell out, and the capacity of St. James Hall has been capped at just over 200. So, again, we stress: Book Now!!

Yes! A second show has been added, but this is not a mere repeat of the previous night. Far from it! Tom recently published his first Songbook, and it contains not just the words and music of no less than 120 of his songs, but also short essays and anecdotes about those songs and their origins. Tom will read excerpts from the book and take requests all night long, striving not to repeat any of the songs he plays on Saturday! So it will be an equally memorable show, and if you can't make it on Saturday – or if you are a devotee and want to hear EVERYTHING (in which case you have extremely good taste!) come to BOTH shows!

We will have tickets for this show on sale on the website. There will not be any tickets available at the door on the Saturday, but there likely will be on Sunday; I wouldn't advise risking it, though. Please book your tickets to avoid disappointment!

Under their banner 'Forward with Scotland’s Past', Battlefield Band have been a bedrock of talent for over four decades, and continue to lead the way for Scotland with their inspired fusion of ancient and modern traditional music and song. Scotland’s great flagship band are the musicians that others measure themselves against, and their new album ‘Room For All’ finds them fresh and invigorated, illustrating once again that they are among the most relevant contemporary composers and interpreters of Celtic music today.

Founded by a group of friends in 1969 and named after the ‘Battlefield’ area of Glasgow, the band have now been touring & performing throughout the world for over forty years, playing to audiences in Europe, Australia & New Zealand, Asia, the Middle East & Canada, as well as more than 60 cities annually in the United States. Ever evolving; over the years new members have brought with them new ideas, music, instruments, attitudes and influences, leading to continued creativity, freshness and enthusiasm. The new line-up includes young multi-instrumentalist Ewen Henderson, and has been received with great acclaim on their US, Canadian & UK tours, as the group move on to a new, exciting period in their musical development.

At the inaugural Scots Trad Music Awards in 2003, Battlefield Band were awarded ‘Best Live Act’. These respected awards celebrate Scotland’s thriving traditional musical scene; the nominees are chosen by a panel of Scotland’s traditional music experts, and the winners chosen by popular public vote, so the band felt extremely honoured to be the first artists to receive this award. Still at the forefront of the Scottish music scene after 40 years, the group was very pleased to have been nominated again for the Scots Trad Music Awards 2011: this time for ‘Scottish Folk Band of the Year’. The new CD will doubtless earn them another nomination in next year's awards!

On February 5, 2013 Pharis & Jason Romero released their second duo record, Long Gone Out West Blues. A follow-up to their 2011 release A Passing Glimpse, Long Gone Out West Blues brings a "veteran spirit" to Pharis and Jason's music in keeping with their love of traditional music — connecting 1927 to 2013 in the most honest way they can. We saw them making a huge impression at the Folk Alliance Conference in Toronto in February – it was such a joy to see these BC musicians earning respect and universal acclaim from the world's media and musicians alike!

Coming from a thousand miles and a border apart, Pharis and Jason met in 2007 at an old-time fiddle jam. Both had been playing music for decades – Pharis her whole life – and both were drawn to early country, old time, blues, and bluegrass. In 2010 they moved their home and the J. Romero Banjo Company north to Pharis' hometown, the small interior B.C. town of Horsefly. In this wilderness hamlet they build their finely crafted banjos, and write and sing old time country – the songs and tunes, new and old, they adore.

Writing songs about ageless characters, hard living, loss and love, Pharis' songs have been played on radios around the world, and she was called a "historical treasure" by the BC Folklore Society. On stage from a very young age with her family's country music band, she was a co-founder of the western Canadian outfit Outlaw Social, an award-winning and innovative roots-folk band that released two celebrated albums from 2005 to 2009.

A Passing Glimpse won New / Emerging Artist of the Year at the 2012 Canadian Folk Music Award, Americana Album of the Year at the 2012 Independent Music Awards, and and was included on many Best of 2011 lists including Folk Alley, Uprooted Music Revue, Folk-DJ listserve, and Galaxie Folk-Roots. It was also the #1 album on the North American Folk DJ playlists, and in the Top 20 albums on the Roots Music Report in 2012.

In the 10 years since he became a working musician, John Wort Hannam has released 5 albums and captured 7 Grand prize/First place awards for his songwriting as well as a Juno nomination for Best Traditional/Roots album and a Canadian Folk Music Award for Album of the Year. His music has taken him from his home in Alberta to his birthplace, the Isle of Jersey, UK, to appearances in festivals from Trafalgar Square to the Smithsonian to Kerrville, TX.

John Wort Hannam in concert is a powerful singer with poignant lyrics to match. His latest CD, Brambles & Thorns (Borealis Records) was produced by Leeroy Stagger, and Steve Dawson produced his previous two CDs. This will be John's Rogue Folk debut. Let's give him a warm welcome!

It's no wonder Cousins is the object of audience affection…” – The Boston Globe

A native of PEI, now residing in Halifax, Rose Cousins finds insight in solitude and strength in numbers. Supported by a thriving Halifax music scene and welcomed by an equally vibrant Boston community, her latest album We Have Made A Spark (2012) was made in the spirit of community and collaboration. We Have Made A Spark follows Cousins' two multi-award-winning albums The Send Off (2009) produced by Luke Doucet and If You Were For Me (2006) produced by CBC in Halifax. Yet another collection of stunning songs by Rose Cousins, her third album braves weighty topics.

Rooted in authenticity and conviction of voice, from driving opening track "The Darkness" to stark piano ballad "Go First", you feel as though Rose Cousins sings for you, about your life. It is that sincerity that leads some to compare Cousins to our most beloved songwriters, and yet, her passionate delivery is distinctly, Rose. From writing songs in a tiny cabin without electricity on a New Hampshire island ("All The Stars," "The Shell") to the stage of one her many international tour stops her lone voice reaches out to listeners, all of us surrounded by our own forms of darkness, and charges us to have the courage to forge ahead.

“Cousins' latest album, We Have Made A Spark, is nothing short of sublime and was justly nominated earlier this year for the Polaris Music Prize as Best Canadian Album. It didn't win but got lots of votes and is surely one of the best records made in Canada over the past decade let alone the past year. Think Joni Mitchell's Blue or any one of Cohen's poetic manifestos – Spark matches those Canadian classics in its compositional rigour and intense performances.” – John Goodman, North Shore News

Del Barber is the son of a draft dodger. He grew up in southern Manitoba, balanced on the line that separates town from country. His heroes yielded hockey sticks and fishing rods. Del woke up one morning at 19-years-old and he began to run. Any train, bus, road or trail, fuelled his desire to see more at whatever cost. He traded his athletic heroes for writers that died young. He chased Jack Kerouac’s ghost across the continent, working dozens of jobs to get there. Del also planted trees in northern B.C., served coffee and breakfast in Georgia, and drove drug addicts to their court dates in Winnipeg. He worked as mountain guide, a janitor, a construction worker, a groundskeeper, a landscaper, a farmer, a counsellor, an ice-maker, a teacher’s assistant, a driver, a roofer, a fisherman and more; in 15 states and 8 Provinces.

At its core, Del Barber’s album Headwaters is about searching for the source of our desires, and the freedom that comes from understanding the ways in which the sources influence our directions. Rivers can’t change where they begin, or where they run, neither can we change our histories or escape their influence on us. Headwaters is a collection of parables, hymns and manifestos, stories of love and loss, sadness and joy, threaded together by the search for an ultimate source. Headwaters is his third record in four years.

Del is 28-years-old, a guitar player and a songwriter. Sometimes he preaches, sometimes he rhymes and he knows that he will never do anything but this. His world has turned into managers, agents, airports, festivals and promoters, but his source is still just a dashboard, a radio, a guitar and a pen.
