Langara College is working in partnership with the government of Nunavut to deliver an innovative educational program for School Community Counsellors (Illinniarvimmi Inuusilirjii). School Community Counsellors play a unique and pivotal role in supporting students to stay in school in small, isolated northern communties.

The Taking Action: Langara College Community Lecture series is presented by current and retired Langara faculty.

Che Guevara Volunteer Work Brigade Info Night & Fundraiser
FRIDAY, MARCH 1
7PM
Joe's Cafe (in Large North Hall)
1150 Commercial Dr (at William St)
Vancouver, Canada

On Friday March 1 we invite you to join Vancouver Communities in Solidarity with Cuba to learn more about an incredible opportunity to travel to Cuba with the 2013 Ernesto Che Guevara Volunteer Work Brigade. The evening will feature videos, photos, stories, poems and anecdotes from past Brigadistas, as well as a chance to win some fantastic Cuban prizes in a raffle draw!

*** LAUNCHING OF THE VCSC ‘PENNY DRIVE’ FUNDRAISER ***
At our February 15 film and cultural evening we launched the penny drive and two wonderful donors  shared the Cuban prize pack, March 1 is your next chance to win as a special Cuban prize pack will again be awarded to the person or people who bring the biggest change collection! So if you are not sure what to do with all of the pennies you have in jars, cups and hidden under the couch at home, why not donate them to Vancouver Communities in Solidarity with Cuba? We need your help fundraising to send volunteers on the 2013 Che Guevara Volunteer Work Brigade to Cuba! Of course we always accept ALL donations in any form, but due to the coming elimination of the penny we decided it was good time to encourage our supporters to bring in their loose change and make a donation! We will have a rolling station set up and look forward to receiving your pennies, nickels, dimes, loonies and twoonies!

Sylvia Herold and the Rhythm Bugs sing lighthearted swing and mid-century pop songs in lush three-part harmony. Sylvia Herold (Wake the Dead, Cats & Jammers, Euphonia), Ed Johnson (vocals/guitar), Jennifer Scott (vocals/piano), and Cary Black (acoustic bass/vocals) draw from their new CD, The Spider and the Fly. The disc takes its name-and its spirit-from the Fats Waller song, "The Spider and the Fly," a tale of leggy seduction. The material ranges from high-society jazz to low-down Basin Street ballads. The focus is on the elegant vocal arrangements reminiscent of the Pied Pipers and the Boswell Sisters. Combining jazz and entomology, Sylvia Herold and the Rhythm Bugs concoct a honey of a musical cocktail that will give listeners a buzz.

Winner of the 2010 Independent Music Award for best acoustic song, this Canadian singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist makes her Rogue debut to launch her new CD. With echoes of accordion-driven French and Gypsy music, jazz, folk, blues and more, her music encompasses influences from around the world and from a vast array of musical forms.

Joanna developed her cosmopolitan tastes growing up in multicultural Toronto in a family with Italian-American, New Zealand and Brazilian roots; a well-nurtured thirst for new cultural experiences is unmistakable in Joanna's music. Her songs show influences from klezmer and Balkan choral music to tango and flamenco. She is a skilled guitarist, pianist, and clarinettist, but her live shows also feature other, less conventional, instruments – many of her own creation.

Fiddler Bruce Molsky launches his seventh solo CD, If It Ain't Here When I Get Back, while mandolin wizard John Reischman launches his third solo album, Walk Along John.

Bruce Molsky stands today as the premier old-time fiddler in the world, the defining virtuoso of Appalachia's timeless folk music traditions. That must feel odd for a former engineer from the Bronx, who didn't begin a music career until he was forty. But folded into those strange facts is the secret to his unique genius. In addition to a prolific solo career, performing on fiddle, guitar, and banjo, Molsky frequently joins genre-busting supergroups, like the Grammy-nominated Fiddlers Four, and Mozaik, with Hungarian Nikola Parov, and Celtic giant Donal Lunny. He was on Nickel Creek's farewell tour, and performs in a trio with Scottish fiddler Aly Bain and Sweden's great Ale Moller.

Playing in these kinds of groups is an important part of what I do, Molsky says. Regionalism was one of the hallmarks of traditional music in the old days; now we're in the Information Age, and I don't think that's what folk music does anymore. But the more cultures I discover, the more I realize that folk music performs the same function for everybody; and therefore is the same thing everywhere – just spoken with different accents.

This is also a CD release show celebrating the music from mandolin master John Reischman's long awaited new CD, Walk Along John. The all-instrumental recording includes nine new John Reischman originals, a few hand-picked traditional tunes, and a remake of the very first tune John wrote. The impressive group of supporting players featured on the recording includes Bruce Molsky (who, as luck would have it, shares the bill this evening), Chris Thile, Tony Trischka, Kenny Smith, the Jaybirds, and many more.

This will be an opportunity for Vancouver audiences to hear John play with a new cast of characters. The band for this show is featured on several tunes on the new recording. The group is made up of Patrick Metzger on bass, Trent Freeman on fiddle, and Eli West on guitar and bouzouki. Jaybirds Nick Hornbuckle and Trisha Gagnon will also make guest appearances.

Multiple Juno Award winning Stephen Fearing is one of the foremost performing singer-songwriters in Canada. Mixing powerful lyrics, creative arrangements and brilliant guitar playing, Fearing has built up a loyal and dedicated international audience with a wide range of songs – from his 1988 release Out to Sea, to his last Juno winning album Yellowjacket. A founding member of Blackie & the Rodeo Kings, Stephen has collaborated with many artists including Shawn Colvin, Richard Thompson, Sarah McLachlan, Tom Wilson, Colin Linden, Margo Timmins and most recently producing Happy Here the latest Juno-nominated album from Suzie Vinnick.

His latest recording, The Man Who Married Music is a 'Best Of' collection, with tracks handpicked by Stephen, featuring some of the best music he has released over his career. Stephen, of course, is very familiar to Rogue Folkies, being a founding member of the Club and a frequent performer here as well. We are delighted to bring him back to launch a new CD.
