Procedure VCN Account

User Search in Putty

PURPOSE

Procedure on how to search for a user account in PUTTY

STEPS TO BE TAKEN

Putty is a program that allows you to securely log in to VCN using ssh. Always use Putty! Do not use telnet to log in to VCN because it allows anyone on the network to see your password.

  1. Open PUTTY.
  2. Double click on “vcn” at the “Saved Sessions” list.
  3. Enter your log in and password.
    Your password is not repeated with *’s, to prevent password theft.
  4. Press “q“.
  5. Press “f” then Enter to choose the full menu system. This will quit the welcome message.
  6. Press “n” to say no when asked to change your terminal emulation settings then enter.
  7. At the Main Menu, type “10” then enter to select “Search the CommunityNet”.

  9. Type “3” then enter to select “User Search”.
  10. Use the customer’s last name or log in ID for an effective search.
    If no account is found, the following is displayed on the screen.

    User Search Results

    The following people have registered online:
    * VAL means the account has been validated. (ie. It should work.)
    * QUE means the account has been queued to be validated tonight.
    * If blank the account has not yet been validated. If blank for more than 2 weeks there may be a [1]problem.

    If an account is found, the following is displayed on the screen.

    The following people have registered online:
    * VAL means the account has been validated. (ie. It should work.)
    * QUE means the account has been queued to be validated tonight.
    * If blank the account has not yet been validated. If blank for more than 2 weeks there may be a [1]problem.

    VAL PPP User ander11 Brian Smith
    VAL Langara  l.awon08 ALICE (NGA SZE) WONG
    VAL PPP Org cssnsh  BCSS North Shore Branch

    This means:
    • Bob Smith has registered, but is not validated.
    • Brian Smith has been validated and can dial up and use email.
    • ALICE WONG is also validated with PPP access.
  11. Notes:
    • VAL means the account has been validated, it should work.
    • QUE means the account has been queued to be validated tonight.
    • If blank the account has not yet been validated.
    • Text accounts can only receive email, these don’t have dialup access.
    • PPP means dial up access and email.
    • Langara is a legacy name for Langara College accounts.
    • Org means this is group/organization account
