Let’s Party…We’re 100!

Port Coquitlam’s year-long 100th birthday party will be in full swing Aug. 16 to 18, with a huge free outdoor music and family festival including headliners Trooper and Bobs & LoLo.

Homecoming Weekend invites current and past residents to “celebrate the good times past and present” with activities and entertainment for people of all ages. The celebrations kick off Aug. 16 with free swimming, followed on Aug. 17 by outdoor music and entertainment, a beer garden, bowling at old-time prices and CP Rail vintage train rides, and on Aug. 18 by one of the region’s largest car shows.

On Aug. 17, a 32-foot by 24-foot stage outside the Port Coquitlam Recreation Complex will host six different acts covering all genres, starting at noon and ending with Juno-winning rockers Trooper, known for hits such as We’re Here for a Good Time. Starting at 1 p.m. at Leigh Square, families will find Juno-nominated children’s entertainers Bobs & LoLo along with improv theatre, storytelling, arts and crafts and roving entertainers.

On Aug. 18 the Port Coquitlam Business Improvement Association will host its annual Downtown Car Show, which attracts hundreds of classic and show cars and thousands of visitors each year. Much of the downtown becomes a pedestrian zone during the free event, which includes displays, entertainment, food and vendors.

Homecoming Weekend is one of more than a dozen celebrations planned by the Port Coquitlam Spirit Committee this year to mark the city’s 100th birthday. Upcoming centennial activities include the Terry Fox Hometown Run on Sept. 15, City at Work showcase Sept. 21, the Rivers & Trails Festival on Sept. 29 and Christmas in Leigh Square on Nov. 30.
