Joel Savoy is the fiddler with the Savoy Cajun Band from Louisiana. He will be joined by his wife Kelli Jones-Savoy on guitar, Cajun accordion wizard Jesse Lege, and Sammy Lind & Nadine Landry from the Foghorn Stringband for a full-on Cajun Dance at St. James Hall!

Cajun dance hall music from Southwest Louisiana

Jesse and Joel make music the way music should be made – full of spontaneity and joy. Together, they play Cajun dance hall music from the prairies of Southwest Louisiana where generations young and old alike come together to celebrate their vibrant culture by dancing, socializing and having a good time. Jesse Lége is the real deal. Growing up in a rural, pre-electricity home in Gueydan, Louisiana, Jesse spoke Cajun French and learned music from relatives, neighbors, and the family's much-loved battery-powered radio. Today he is one of the most admired Cajun accordionists and vocalists in the world, known especially for his high, clear, “crying” vocals. Jesse has been playing traditional Cajun music and singing Cajun French songs for over 30 years performing with a variety of well-known musicians in various Louisiana and southeast Texas dancehalls. He has been nominee and winner of numerous CFMA (Cajun French Music Association) awards: Traditional Band of the Year, Accordion Player of the Year, Male Vocalist of the Year, Band of the Year, Song of the Year (for "Memoires Dans Mon Coeur"). In 1998 he was inducted into the Cajun Music Hall of Fame.

Joel Savoy, son of Cajun music royalty Marc and Ann, grew up in the middle of a renaissance for the Cajun culture of southwest Louisiana. Exposure from an early age to a constant stream of musicians, folk festivals, and music industry gurus laid the basis for the entrepreneurial music career he began as a young teenager, developing a strong sense of musicality, good taste and creativity. In performance he represents his culture with an authority that few people his age can and his playing leaves no doubt that Cajun music is still very much alive. Well versed in music and a quick learner, he can be found playing with just about every band in SWLA a some time or other, though most often he’s seen with his brother Wilson and their parents in the Savoy Family Band. As a Cajun 30-something year-old living in a modern world, Joel is part of a growing group of young folks in SWLA dedicated to honoring, preserving and living the legacy that is Cajun culture, instigating and supporting traditional events such as the Courir de Mardi Gras and boucheries. In 2006 Joel founded Valcour Records which has since developed into what many believe to be the number one music source for what’s happening in Acadiana today, garnering one GRAMMY and 7 GRAMMY nominations to date. He’s worked and played with T-Bone Burnett, Steve Earle, Linda Ronstadt, and most recently John Fogerty. T-Bone Burnett summed it up when he said, "Everything Joel Savoy touches turns to music.”

Ruth Moody is a two-time Juno Award winning singer-songwriter from Winnipeg, Manitoba. Founding member of the internationally renowned, Billboard-charting trio The Wailin’ Jennys, and former lead singer of the Canadian roots band Scruj MacDuhk, she has performed in sold-out venues around the world, made numerous critically-acclaimed albums, received five Juno awards nominations, and has appeared more than a dozen times on the American national radio show A Prairie Home Companion.

Although best known for her work with The Wailin’ Jennys, Ruth is an artist of exceptional depth and grace in her own right. Critics have lauded her ethereal vocals, impressive multi-instrumentalism, and her talent as a songwriter. Written with a maturity and wisdom that belies her age, her songs are timeless, universal, and carefully crafted, all sung with an intimacy and honesty that is unmistakably her own.

She launches her second solo CD, These Wilder Things, the highly anticipated follow-up to the Garden. Once again produced by Travers-Smith, it features guest appearances by Mark Knopfler, Jerry Douglas, Aoife O’Donovan, Mike McGoldrick, John McCusker, and The Wailin’ Jennys.

Long considered one of the most important guitarists in Irish and acoustic music worldwide, John Doyle is now increasingly lauded for his singing and songwriting talents. From a musical family in Dublin, John's influences include English folk singers Nic Jones, Martin Carthy, Richard Thompson, and The Watersons; Scottish singers Dick Gaughan and John Martin; and fellow Irishmen Paul Brady and Al O'Donnell as well as his father, Sean Doyle – probably the biggest influence of all. John went on the road as a pro at 16 with the group Chanting House which he formed with Susan McKeown and went on to create the highly acclaimed group, Solas, with Seamus Egan, John Williams, Karan Casey and Winifred Horan which took the folk and Celtic music worlds by storm, in no small part due to John's powerhouse rhythmic guitar style and innovative arrangements.

After leaving Solas, John has gone on to perform and tour with other greats in the Folk, Celtic and Bluegrass worlds. He has appeared on soundtracks for the feature film, The Brothers McMullan, Soldier, PBS's Out of Ireland and also composed the music for the film Uncle Robert's Footsteps and the play Down the Flats as well as performing on countless recordings as guitarist and/or singer for many other notable artists. In recent years, John has gained major prominence in the Celtic and Folk worlds in duos with Chicago fiddler Liz Carroll; as Karan Casey and John Doyle; as McGoldrick, McCusker and Doyle; and as one third of the stellar trio "The Teetotallers" with Martin Hayes and Kevin Crawford. 2008-2010 saw John on the road with folk legend Joan Baez as her music director and guitarist.

With the release of John's most recent solo recoding, Shadow and Light (Compass Records) in 2011, his significant talents as songwriter and singer are finally coming to the fore. Impossibly in demand in the studio and on the road, immensely talented and blessed with an acute ear, a wicked sense of rhythm and a seemingly endless bag of chops, John has firmly established himself as one of the most versatile, creative and prolific voices in folk and traditional Irish music.

Canadian songstress and slide guitarist Rachelle van Zanten, whose raw melange of blues, folk, Americana and serious guitar-shredding is currently shaking up an audience of its own.

After 11 years in the trenches, Canadian slide guitarist Rachelle van Zanten is done with bands. In 2006 she released her first solo album, "Back to Francois", which is packed with funky blues riffs and stellar slide performances. The surprise is that van Zanten juxtaposes her gutsy guitar playing with very personal and introspective lyrics – a stylistic trait she attributes to her diverse influences. – Guitar Player Magazine

She has come a long way from her bluegrass upbringing in the foothills of northern British Columbia, recently recording a rock album with producer Joby Baker (Cowboy Junkies, Alex Cuba, The Weakerthans, Mae Moore) and world-renowned sound engineer, Tchad Blake (Sheryl Crow, Paul Simon, Tom Waits, Richard Thompson, Los Lobos, Pearl Jam). Rachelle is a unique and eclectic Americana singer-songwriter. Rachelle has performed with Feist, Blue Rodeo, Clarence Gatemouth Brown and Sue Foley; and has supported Indigo Girls, Eagle Eye Cherry and Dar Williams. Rachelle's recent tour schedule took her through Canada, the United Kingdom, Germany, Holland, Belgium, France, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, India and Nepal.

In her "spare" time, van Zanten in the producer of Canada's Rocker Girl Camp, a motivational music camp for young women ages 10-17. (www.rockergirlcamp.com)
