Vancouver CommunityNet Board Minutes--September 16, 1997 Present: Penny Goldsmith, Larry Kuehn, Jack Vickery, Ryan Hung, Katharine Shipley, Greg Sturk, Carolyn Saunders, Neil K. Guy. The meeting was called to order by Penny Goldsmith at 6:40. 1. Adoption of agenda. M/S/C That the agenda be adopted. 2. Adoption of minutes. M/S/C That the minutes of July 15, 1997, be adopted with the correction to the spelling of Greg Sturk. 3. Office items. The staff report was reviewed. Greg Sturk will follow up on getting a regular item in the Computer Paper. Jack Vickery is working with HRDC on the North Shore on a potential project with VCN. Training--it was agreed that we would look at ways of providing more training. 4. Fundraising. i) B.C. Multicultural project--Larry Kuehn will be the VCN board member for the steering committee. ii) Jobseekers Internet Project--work on this project grant is proceeding. iii) Industry Canada--a grant application is going in. iv) United Way--expect to hear from them shortly. v) Heritage Canada--not proceeded with grant proposal yet. vi) Vancouver Foundation--their web page will be housed on the VCN. vii)Communities Connect--a proposal has been prepared for submission in conjunction with Eco-cities. viii)Communities Connect--another proposal is being prepared by three North Shore public libraries, which may include VCN. Other proposals: M/S/C That the VCN should provide private discussion groups based on $50 per year, with the charge to be reviewed. M/S/C That phone sponsor recognition be adopted based on: *Full screen recognition for a line. *Text-based recognition "This phone line is sponsored by..." *Brief, non-persuasive description of services. *Phone number, address, URL listed. *URL listed in "commercial links." *Name/logo recognition on VCN materials where appropriate. *Recognized as a charitable gift. 5. Systems administration. It was agreed that the issue of whether "spam" should be blocked will be taken to the AGM for a decision by members. It was agreed that Devin Lindsey should be notified that the VCN intends to keep the equipment that he has requested. 6. Annual general meeting. M/S/C That the AGM be scheduled for Wednesday, November 12, 1997. 7. Public relations. Penny spoke to the International Interactive Communications Society about community content on the Internet. Penny is speaking at a conference on Women and the Internet in Ottawa in mid-October. VCN will share a table with the Association of B.C. Book Publishers at the Word on the Street on September 28. 8. Announcements. A B.C. Community Networking Association meeting was held in Vancouver on September NEXT MEETING: October 14, 1997.
