Incite @ VPL: Noah Richler & Trevor and Debbie Greene

Please join the Vancouver International Writers Festival at the Central Library for a series of illuminating readings and discussions. Noah Richler reads from his latest book What We Talk About When We Talk About War and Trevor and Debbie Greene discuss March Forth, the inspiring true story of a Canadian soldier’s journey of love, hope and survival. Noah Richler examines how the governing narrative and associated jargon - victory, defeat, heroes, remembrance, sacrifice - used by politicians and the military when talking about war have populated public pronouncements and media coverage, resulting in a revised national mythology and a re-interpretation of the events of past years. Richler suggests that our changing narrative about war speaks volumes about our collective consciousness and how we have conceived and redefined ourselves as a nation as we talked ourselves into, through, and ultimately out of our participation in war. March Forth is a remarkable story of love, told in two voices. Trevor Greene, a journalist and reservist in the Canadian Army had been deployed to Kandahar in 2006. While meeting with village elders in a remote Kandahar Province, Greene removed his helmet out of respect and without warning a teenage boy under the influence of the Taliban came up behind and swung a rusty axe deep into his skull. Trevor’s fiancée, Debbie, was initially told that he would not survive; after years of rehabilitation with Debbie at his side Trevor learned to talk and move again. In July 2010 he stood up at his own wedding. Admission is free. Seating is limited. Co-sponsored by Vancouver International Writers Festival, http://www.writersfest.bc.ca.
Cooperation or Conquest: Coast Salish Legal Traditions and the Canadian State Sarah Morales will explain Coast Salish legal traditions - snuw’uyulh and the displacement of those laws during and after the colonial period. Prior to contact with Europeans the diverse norms and practices of different Indigenous peoples on the west coast of British Columbia had evolved into highly developed legal traditions that guided these peoples in the governance of community, the environment and relationships between people. Against this background Morales will examine the concept of legal pluralism and the potential for such a system today in Canada.
BC Book Prizes: Poetry Finalists Reading

Please join us as several of the finalists for the 2012 Dorothy Livesay Poetry Prize read from their nominated work. The evening will be hosted by Evelyn Lau, Vancouver’s Poet Laureate. The BC Book Prizes, established in 1985, celebrate the achievements of British Columbia writers and publishers. The winners of 28th Annual BC Book Prize will be announced May 12. John Pass: author of crawlspace. These poems work within the narrowing passages imposed upon us by the inevitable strictures and limitations of living and experience: again, love and loss, tightening or unravelling family ties. Susan McCaslin: author of Demeter Goes Skydiving. What if Demeter, the timeless fertility goddess of ancient Greek myth, slipped through a crack into the 21st century and began a tour of improbable culture? McCaslin exercises the profound mother-daughter trauma forged in the Demeter-Persephone myth with unapologetic modernity. Garry Thomas Morse: author of Discovery Passages. With its continuous poetic dialogue of discovery and recovery, Discovery Passages sets out to recover the appropriated, stolen and scattered world of the author’s ancestral people, the Kwakwaka’wakw. Sharon Thesen: author of Oyama Pink Shale. Thesen’s poems show the transience of the earthly moment while convincing us of the thread of spirit that links all our lost bits and makes them possible. Admission is free. Seating is limited. Vancouver Public Library thanks a special donor and the Vancouver Public Library Foundation for making this event possible.

Please join the Vancouver International Writers Festival at the Central Library for a series of illuminating readings and discussions. On May 9th, CBC personality Linden MacIntyre and prize-winning author Vincent Lam take the stage to discuss their latest works. Linden MacIntyre is a co-host of The Fifth Estate and the winner of nine Gemini Awards for broadcast journalism. Linden will read from his brilliant new novel, Why Men Lie. A middle-aged, self-sufficient woman feels immunized against the damage men can do and enjoys a hard-won independence. A chance encounter with a man on a subway platform changes everything and she gambles her emotional resources as she never has before – only to learn that men must lie, and that the consequences of an unexpected lie can be disastrous. Internationally acclaimed and bestselling author Vincent Lam reads from The Headmaster’s Wager, a superbly crafted, highly suspenseful and deeply affecting novel set against the turmoil of the Vietnam War. Blessed with intriguingly flawed characters moving through a richly drawn historical and physical landscape it is a riveting story of love, betrayal and sacrifice. Dr. Vincent Lam is a Lecturer with the Department of Family and Community Medicine at the University of Toronto. His first book, Bloodletting and Miraculous Cures, won the 2006 Scotiabank Giller Prize and has recently been adapted for television and broadcast on HBO Canada. Admission is free.
Taras Grescoe

Please join us for an evening with award-winning author Taras Grescoe and his newest book Straphanger: Saving Our Cities and Ourselves from the Automobile. Grescoe rides the rails all over the world and makes an elegant and impassioned case for the imminent end of car culture and the coming transportation revolution. The perception of public transportation in America is often unflattering and a century of auto-centric culture and city planning has left most of the country with public transportation that is underfunded, ill-maintained and ill-conceived. As the demand for petroleum is fast outpacing the world’s supply, a revolution in transportation is under way. Grescoe explores the ascendance of the straphanger and profiles public transportation here and abroad, highlighting the people and ideas that will create better city living for all. Taras Grescoe is the author of four books and countless articles focusing on world travel. He’s written for The New York Times, the Times (London), Wired, The Chicago Tribune Magazine and the Los Angeles Times. Admission is free. Seating is limited. Yet the government of Canada still claims their stated aim of “continuing to support the formal education system in Afghanistan” and has promised that “Canada will continue to invest in education.” How could the government of Canada be investing in Afghanistan’s education system, when they are not even investing in the education system here at home? Teachers, their unions and the education system across Canada are under attack from the government of Canada, and here in BC from the provincial government. The BC Teachers Federation (BCTF), currently engaged in a job action to fight for increased funding and better conditions for students and teachers in BC, has stated “we want the government to invest a lot more in students and a little more in teachers.” The government of Canada is not investing in education, in Afghanistan or in Canada. Billions upon billions of public funds are being funneled into sending troops, weapons, fighter jets and bombs to destroy oppressed people around the world. It is up to peace loving people in Canada, alongside students and teachers, to join together under the banner of “Money for Education not for War!” “Yes to Students and Teachers, No to War!” ~ Multimedia, Speakers and Discussion ~ This lecture will include reports and analysis from antiwar activists and BCTF teachers on strike.
Incite @ VPL: An Exploration of Books and Ideas

Please join the Vancouver International Writers Festival at the Central Library for a series of illuminating readings and discussions. You are invited to an evening with Irish novelist John Boyne, reading from his new novel The Absolutist. Buffy Cram reads from her debut collection of short stories Radio Belly and Owen Laukkanen shares his debut thriller The Professionals. It’s September 1919 in John Boyne’s The Absolutist and twenty-year-old Tristan Sadler takes a train from London to Norwich to deliver some letters to Marian Bancroft. During the Great War, Tristan fought alongside Marian's brother Will who laid down his gun on the battlefield and was shot as a traitor, an act which brought shame and dishonour on his family. Tristan now holds a secret deep in his soul. Buffy Cram’s Radio Belly is a formidable debut of nine surreally funny, politically astute and emotionally gripping stories. In the surreal world of Buffy Cram’s stories, someone or something has slipped beneath the skins of her already beleaguered characters, rearranging the familiar into something strange and even sinister, making off with their emotional and even physical goods. Owen Laukkanen's The Professionals follows four friends, recent college graduates, caught in a terrible job market, who begin to joke about turning to kidnapping to survive. And then, suddenly, it's no joke. Admission is free. Seating is limited.
Please join the Vancouver International Writers Festival at the Central Library for a series of illuminating readings and discussions. You are invited to an evening with Will Ferguson reading from his new novel 419 and Journey Prize-winner Yasuko Thanh reading from her new collection of short stories Floating like the Dead. Best-selling author Will Ferguson writes a novel both epic in its sweep and intimate in its portrayal of human suffering. 419 takes readers behind the scene of the world’s most insidious internet scam and tells a story of love in a time of darkness, of one woman’s search for redemption, and of a young boy who will triumph above it all. In her debut collection, Floating like the Dead, Journey Prize-winner Yasuko Thanh immerses us in the lives of people on the knife edge of desire and regret, hungry for change yet still yearning for a place to call home. With this seductive and emotionally compelling collection, Yasuko Thanh announces herself as an exciting new voice in Canadian fiction. Admission is free. Seating is limited.
Langara Community College Lecture Series: Changing Definitions of Death by Alister Browne

It is a common saying that the only two certainties are death and taxes. Thanks largely to medical innovations, however, it turns out that it is far from clear when exactly death occurs. We will explore why there is controversy over this, what the alternative definitions are, and the importance of arriving at a definition of death. The Langara College Community Lecture series is presented by current and retired Langara College faculty. Admission is free. Seating is limited.
Out of the Blue: The Nature and Treatment of Clinical Depression

Depression is one of the most significant public health challenges in Canada. It is, by some measures the single largest cause of long-term disability in the country. But what is it, exactly? What causes it? Is it really just a biochemical imbalance? And, most importantly, how do we treat it? What can someone do on their own to prevent or help overcome the problem? In this talk psychologist and author Dr. Randy Paterson sheds light on this complex disorder, and on some basic self-care strategies that turn out to be surprisingly potent. Admission is free. Seating is limited. Co-sponsored by Changeways Clinic. For more information on Library events, visit http://www.vpl.ca

Incite @ VPL: Tamara Faith Berger, Anakana Schofield and Ben Wood

You are invited to an evening with one of Canada’s bravest writers, Tamara Faith Berger, as she discusses her third novel Maidenhead. She will be joined by Anakana Schofield and Ben Wood as they read from their debut novels, Malarky and The Bellwether Revivals. Tamara Faith Berger's novel Maidenhead traverses the desperate, wild spaces of a teenage girl’s self-consciousness. How does a girl feel scared? What is she scared of? And does telling yourself not to be scared really work? Anakana Schofield is an Irish-Canadian writer of fiction, essays, and literary criticism. Her wicked humour is everywhere apparent, and Malarky, brilliantly drawn in the cadences of contemporary Ireland, is an absolutely peerless tour-de-force. Part Secret History, part Brideshead Revisited for the 21st century, Ben Wood's The Bellwether Revivals is a page-turning, romantic, eerie tale of genius and, possibly, madness; a stunning debut for fans of Sarah Waters, Donna Tartt, and Lauren Goff. Admission is free. Seating is limited.
Incite @ VPL: Steven Price & Julie Bruck

An evening with BC author Steven Price as he reads from his new collection of poetry Omens in the Year of the Ox and poet Julie Bruck shares her latest work, Monkey Ranch. Steven Price's Omens in the Year of the Ox is part of a long-lived struggle to address the mysteries that both surround and inhabit us. The book draws together moments both contemporary and historical, ranging from Herodotus to Augustine of Hippo, from a North American childhood to Greek mythology. In poems that range from free verse to prose to formal constructions, Price addresses the moral lack in the human heart and the labour of living with such a heart. "Monkey Ranch has all the antic sensuality and thrilling precision we’ve come to expect from Julie Bruck’s work. This volume has a pitch-perfect elegance that calms the ruckus just long enough for us to glimpse the vulnerability of everyone involved. Monkey Ranch is like the best sort of letter from a friend—full of gossip, lively observation, and serious wit." --Sharon Thesen Admission is free. Seating is limited.
Winds of Heaven: Emily Carr, Carvers and the Spirits of the Forest

To commemorate the 140th anniversary of Emily Carr’s birth on December 13, please join author Susan Crean for commentary on and a screening of "Winds of Heaven: Emily Carr, Carvers, and the Spirits of the Forest" by Michael Ostroff. This impressionistic film explores the spirit that informed the solitary life of one of Canada’s most celebrated painters. Emily Carr began painting in an era when women didn’t paint, travelling to remote locations that few professional adventurers chose to go. Not only did she adopt the painting techniques of modernism, when such ideas were considered dangerous, Carr chronicled the extraordinary art and culture of native peoples, who were invisible the dominant culture. The film runs 87 minutes. Admission is free. Seating is limited. Co-sponsored by Historic Joy Kogawa Historic House. For more information on Library events, visit http://www.vpl.ca

The Chuck Davis History of Metropolitan Vancouver

In his ambitious magnum opus, "The Chuck Davis History of Metropolitan Vancouver", author Chuck Davis embraced 125 years of material, with the signature exuberance and talent for storytelling that made him one of Vancouver's most successful and beloved journalists and broadcasters. This volume represents the culmination of his life as a folk historian, someone who was obsessed and delighted by all things Vancouver, and of his immense contribution to historical knowledge of the city of Vancouver. It was nearly realized, but not quite completed before his death in November, 2010. Harbour Publishing has collaborated with the Vancouver Historical Society to complete the volume in 2011 to mark the city's 125th anniversary, as was the author's plan. Illustrated with a trove of archival photographs, this volume includes influential characters both famous, like White Spot founder Nat Bailey, and nearly-forgotten, like Sara Anne McLagan, the first female publisher of a daily newspaper in Canada, plus many tales of eccentric locals and celebrity visitors. Admission is free. Seating is limited. Co-sponsored by Harbour Publishing. For more information on Library events, visit http://www.vpl.ca

Joel Bakan

Corporations have a new resource to mine for profit: our Children. In "Childhood Under Siege: How Big Business Targets Children", Joel Bakan reveals the astonishingly callous and widespread exploitation of children by profit-seeking corporations-and also society's shameful failure to protect them. The creator of the award-winning film and internationally best-selling book "The Corporation", Bakan shows how corporations pump billions of dollars into rendering parents and governments powerless to shield children from a relentless commercial assault designed solely to exploit their unique needs and vulnerabilities. His book offers a hopeful vision for change. Joel will also comment about the Occupy movement that is happening across the world. Admission is free. Seating is limited. Co-sponsored by Banyen Books.
Arley McNeney

Join us for the launch of "The Time We All Went Marching", the latest novel from Vancouver’s Arley McNeney. Set during the 1930s and 40s in the BC interior, this novel is set in a period in history rarely explored in fiction. Skillfully deploying the history of the On To Ottawa Trek, when over a thousand men from relief camps attempted to protest their brutal conditions, Arley McNeney illuminates the human struggle to fight for survival - no matter what the cost. Special guest Joey Hartman, president of the On-to-Ottawa Historical Society, and president of the Vancouver & District Labour Council, will be on hand to address the historical significance of that movement. Admission is free. Seating is limited. Co-sponsored by Goose Lane Editions. For more information on Library events, visit http://www.vpl.ca

Maria's Opus

This Annual B.C. Cancer Foundation fundraiser will take place Sunday November 27th at the Hellenic Community Centre. An event that has glittered and sparkled audiences returns to raise funds for all the family, friends, and loved ones that have been lost to cancer. Creator, Natalia Pardalis created the event in 2008 and continues in her fight to give back to the BC Cancer Foundation. "They help so many cancer patients, just rece...ntly I met a lady whose cancer painkillers were stolen but the BC Cancer Foundations replaced all of them at no cost. Maria's Opus was inspired by the loss of my mother and aunt to this horrible disease, but I am driven to continue creating Maria's Opus by watching too many people in our community fight cancer. We must fight to rid the world of this killer—cancer." This year, the Maria's Opus team returns with a fusion of music, art, dance, and drama—this is a night you do not want to miss. Youth driven performances will take place under the attentive eyes of Natalia Pardalis, Johnny Kelto, and Angela Amici. This event promises to dazzle the audience. It will be a night to remember. When Natalia was asked what to expect, she answered with one word: "IMAGINE." Team Maria's Opus goal is to raise over $10 000 for the BC Cancer Foundation. Tiickets are $20 and sold online on www.mariasopus.com. Past years have sold out so be sure to buy your tickets early. The event will include a silent auction and light reception to follow. If you are unable to attend this exciting event -- we are currently accepting donations on our website for the BC Cancer Foundation!

John Gilmore & Keith Harrison: Author Readings

Please join us for readings by authors John Gilmore and Keith Harrison. John Gilmore’s first novel, "Head of a Man" is a poetic narrative that subverts one of the primary stories of Western culture, Odysseus’ entrapment by the sorcerer Circe and his subsequent journey to the underworld. Resonant, at time unsettling, "Head of a Man" is a portrait of a contemporary man at a psychological and spiritual impasse. Keith Harrison’s most recent work is "The Missionary, The Violinist and the Aunt Whose Head was Squeezed", a remarkable and honest fusion of travel writing, family history, and cultural anthropology which is also a quest for meaning and an understated love story. Harrison’s novels have been nominated for Books in Canada Best First Novel Award, QSPELL’s Hugh MacLennan Fiction Prize, and the Ethel Wilson Award. Admission is free. Seating is limited. We acknowledge the support of The Canada Council for the Arts through the Writers Union of Canada. For more information on library events, visit http://www.vpl.ca

Showing Clutter the Door is a reality check - on the issue of household accumulation. Authors and professional organizers Susan Borax and Heather Knittel refer to this as CRUD - Completely Ridiculous Useless Debris. It’s the stuff you ignore, forget, hide, pile up or lose. Using music and humour the authors tackle the most common CRUD problems they’ve encountered. Instead of cringing, participants will laugh their way to a clutter-free existence. Susan Borax has been a member of the Professional Organizers of Canada (POC) since 2004 and currently serves on the BC Chapter’s Executive and is currently completing her TPO (Trained Professional Organizer) designation. Heather Knittel is a member of the National Study Group for Chronic Disorganization and the Professional Organizers in Canada (POC). Admission is free. Seating is limited.
Please join us for a storytelling event by Henry Charles, Vancouver Public Library’s third First Nations Storyteller in Residence. Henry Charles is the last surviving member of the Musqueam Nation to have lived in the endowment lands adjacent to the University of British Columbia. "I gained a rich knowledge of my culture from the time I spent living there with my grandparents", says Mr. Charles whose Musqueam name is tecelgen, which translates as porcupine. Today, Mr. Charles is a Musqueam Speaker and Aboriginal Greeter and he has welcomed numerous visitors and dignitaries to traditional Musqueam territories speaking his native language. Vancouver Public Library created the First Nations Storyteller in Residence program to enhance and establish new relationships with Aboriginal and First Nations communities in Vancouver and to make the Library a more-inclusive and welcoming place for people of Aboriginal and First Nations heritage. It is the first such program at a public library in British Columbia and only the second in Canada after Regina Public Library. Admission is free. Seating is limited.
