The Rogue presents Laura Cortese and Fish & Bird

Brilliant fiddler and singer / songwriter Laura Cortese is known for her velvety vocals, endless creative energy, and highly visible work as a supporting musician. The San Francisco-born, Boston-based performer has embraced the constant travel of the modern troubadour. In fact, she maintains, it is the people she meets who are her greatest inspiration, including her newest songs. Written in an almost confessional style, Cortese’s latest work explores the timeless vulnerability and hope of people in adverse situations. Her own lyrics may say it best: “In the dark I would sing a song whispered low… singing for the people in the shadows.”

At home in any number of styles, Cortese has travelled the world as a solo artist and as a supporting musician (on fiddle, vocals, and bass) including appearances with Rose Cousins, The Low Anthem, Uncle Earl, Tao Rodriguez Seeger, Band of Horses, and – as part of Pete Seeger’s 90th birthday celebration at Madison Square Garden – Patterson Hood and Michael Franti. The variety of textures, styles, and approaches reflect Cortese’s own rich musical background. Raised in the trad hotbed of the San Francisco Bay area, Cortese was introduced to music early on, via school orchestras and musicals. That interest was subsequently expanded at the fiddle camps and festivals she attended as a teenager, where she developed a keen understanding of and aptitude for various traditional fiddle strains. She attended the Berklee College of Music - where her classmates included Carrie Rodriguez, Casey Driessen, and April Verch. This further fuelled her collaborative instincts and modern sensibilities. Cortese self-released two acclaimed solo albums (2004’s traditionally-minded Hush and the more personal Even the Lost Creek in 2006) and has just released Into The Dark, following 3 EPs in the intervening years. Her showmanship, charm and virtuosic technique have made her a favourite among musicians and music lovers alike, at home in New England as well as overseas in the UK, Ireland and Denmark.

Somewhere between the fjords of Norway and the mountains of the Blue Ridge, the fiddle playing of Mariel Vandersteel intones strains of elevation, clarity and tremendous feeling on both traditional violin and the Norwegian Hardingfele (or Hardanger fiddle). Laura’s trio is completed by the wonderful cellist Valerie Thompson.

They will share the bill with B.C. folk / roots powerhouse quintet Fish & Bird, who made a memorable Rogue debut last Fall. Led by fiddler Adam Iredale-Gray and Taylor Ashton (banjo), the band also features Ben Kelly (drums), Ryan Boeur (bass) and Valerie Bohrn (bass). They released their 3rd CD, Every Whisper Is A Shout Across The Void in 2011. The two bands will get together for a few tunes as well.

The Rogue presents Michael Averill & When Coasts Collide

Fresh off a year of musical adventures touring his puzzle album What's Life All About? and a Nepal documentary soundtrack New Day, New Path, New Legend in Asia, Europe, and Canada, the quirky globetrotting folk-fusion story singer returns to Vancouver to release his next concept album - I'd Rather Walk - a tribute project to his late singer/songwriter father Garry Averill, and an endeavor he intends to share walking across the country starting in Newfoundland in August.

A recent serendipitous meeting in an Edmonton Irish pub opened up a link to his father's past in the Yukon, the place where CBC discovered and recorded Garry in the mid 70's. Garry's first written song Take The Time, was selected as a theme for Peter Gzowski's morning show in 1976, which brought forth national recognition and an opportunity to pursue his music. He turned it down, and returned to a quiet life as a teacher with a family. Almost 40 years later, son Michael started performing his father's songs with his own repertoire, and created an album fully inspired by his father's life, influence, and works.

"He was a humorously insightful man who loved to walk," says Michael. "I couldn't think of a better way to honor that than to stroll across this country sharing our songs and stories."

When in town, you may have seen Michael at The Rogue Folk Club, parading around as our resident raffle ticket man. He'll be rounding out the evening with a folk duo project, When Coasts Collide, he started with Nova Scotia born vocal powerhouse, Jen Miller. The pair met in Vancouver almost two years ago as a result of a double booking, and their East/West multi-instrumental folk blend has created quite a stir in the local scene since their official formation in February 2013. Via Rail accepted them to perform on the train across Canada, and they'll be embarking on their first joint tour to Ontario and the Maritimes in June.

The In the House Festival is 10 years old! We've got a weekend of performance for you that you'll never forget. Music, dance, magic, comedy, burlesque and of course a circus will regale your senses for 3 days. And the unique and captivating thing about this festival? It all takes place in the intimacy of someone's home! 13 houses open up their doors and their yards to the 20 spectacular shows that will make you think twice about the purported "NoFunCity" that plagues Vancouver's reputation. There's something for everyone, so don't miss out on this fabulous community building event!

To further celebrate the momentous occasion of our 10th year, we are organizing a free community potluck on Sunday, June 9th. We hope you'll be able to celebrate with us and continue to build community and support the arts in the best way possible: With your friends, family, neighbors and food. So bring a delicious dish to share and join in the fun!

*Please bring your plate, cutlery and drinking container (we'll have some there too in case you forget, but we are trying to limit the amount of garbage produced). Please note: this is a strictly alcohol-free event.

Shadow Jam
Shadowjam is a fully participatory event/workshop where everyone is a performer and everyone is the audience. It's a magical blend of improvised musical jam, in-the-moment shadow puppetry, and spontaneous storytelling. We start by crafting shadow puppets together around a theme. Then we set up a sheet in the middle of the room, with an overhead projector and puppets on one side and musical instruments all around. Everyone is encouraged to try and responding with the whole picture in mind. Participants often describe it as a shared dream.

What to Bring? An open mind and willingness to participate.
Optional: Bring a musical intruments, and any interesting objects you think would look good in the shadows.

George Woodcock Lifetime Achievement Award Presentation: William New

Join us for the presentation of the 20^th annual George Woodcock Lifetime Achievement Award for an outstanding literary career in British Columbia to William New.

One of the most prolific writers in British Columbia, William New is also a critic and editor also known as W.H. New and Bill New. He was awarded both the Mayor’s Award for Literary Arts in Vancouver and the City of Vancouver Book Award for his poetry collection, YVR (Oolichan,2011). He was appointed to the Order of Canada in 2006.

Born in Vancouver on March 28, 1938, William New has written and edited more than 50 books. A new book for pre-teen readers, Sam Swallow and the Riddleworld League (Tradewind, 2013) is forthcoming. In his award-winning poetry collection YVR, New finds subtle and distinctive signs of Vancouver’s past in every neighborhood he visits, from the Blueboy Hotel in South Vancouver to Crab Park on the waterfront to the two-note warnings of Point Atkinson lighthouse in West Vancouver.
