Managing an Account

Changing Your Password via Telnet:

1. Open your Telnet program. In a Windows or Macintosh computer, you can open a browser and then go to telnet://vcn.bc.ca to open up the telnet program.
2. Enter your VCN login and password.
3. Press q, f, enter, enter, to get to the Main Menu.
4. Press 8 for 'Other' and enter, then 2 for Password and enter.
5. Follow the instructions to change your password.
   

You can request us to reset the account to use the original password

1. You send a message to sys-admin@vcn.bc.ca
2. In the subject put: "Password Reset Request"
3. In the body repeat the following details that you gave during registration:
   
   
   • Full name
   • Birthday
   • Login/Username
   • Keyword

If you can't remember the original or current password

You must request us to assign the account with a new password. The procedure to do so depends upon whether you have an individual account or a group account.

Password Resets for Individual

• OPTION 1: Come into the office with picture ID and fill out a Password Reset Request Form.
• OPTION 2: Phone the helpdesk at 604-257-3811 to do the Password Reset over the phone.

Password Reset for Groups

The authorized person of the organization must send us a signed letter on the group's letterhead stating the following:

1. The full name of the group and their login id
2. They are the authorized group contact for their VCN account
3. They are writing to request a password reset
4. A phone number where they can be reached to establish their identity and their preferred password
5. Fax the letter to us at 604-257-3808
6. When we have receive the letter, someone on the help desk team will call them.

Note: An online change takes effect immediately. A change request for us can take a few business days to complete. We try to complete all change requests by the end of the working week.

How to manage your disk space at VCN.

To check your disk space usage at VCN:

1. Telnet to vcn.bc.ca or go to telnet://vcn.bc.ca in your web browser.

2. Enter your VCN login and password.

3. Press q, f, Enter, n, Enter to get the main menu.

4. Press 8, then Enter.

5. Press 3 for "Disk Quota" and press Enter to see how much disk space you're using.

All users have a 26MB limit of disk space. If you go over, you will be given a warning.

Groups have no limit, but 26MB is the recommended limit as they share disk space with other groups.

Delete files on your account using FTP. See WSFTPLE for more information.

Delete your invisible dot files at VCN. Dot files are at VCN to remember settings, so this will not regain much disk space.
